Biography
João Victor Nery Fiocchi Rodrigues is a Beloved Community Transformation Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Africana Studies at the University of Notre Dame. Fiocchi received his MA in Sociology and Ph.D. in Sociology (with graduate certificates in Africana Studies and Latin American and Latinx Studies) from the University of Pennsylvania. He received his Bachelor of Laws and an MA in Law, State, and Constitution from the University of Brasília, Brazil. His general research interests include historical sociology, law and race relations, state formation, and the African Diaspora.
His research draws from Critical Race Theory, the Black Radical Tradition, and decolonial perspectives to examine how racial stratification was translated into the legal systems of forming nation-states in the Americas. He particularly focuses on the construction of citizenship in these societies. Unlike traditional narratives of state formation, his research centers on racial slavery and colonialism in the analysis of state formation in the United States, former Gran Colombia, Brazil, and Haiti.
His paper “No Negro Citizens: Slavery and Citizenship in Comparative Perspective” earned the Devon T. Wade Graduate Student Paper Award (2023) from the Association of Black Sociologists and the Nancy Farriss Graduate Student Paper Award (2022) from the Center for Latin American and Latinx Studies (CLALS) at the University of Pennsylvania. His work has been supported by the Institute for Humane Studies at George Mason University, the Center for the Study of Ethnicity, Race, and Immigration at the University of Pennsylvania, and the Center for Latin American and Latinx Studies at the University of Pennsylvania.
