Becoming Part of the Initiative
Administrative Structure
ISRCAD is administered by the Department of Africana Studies, which is responsible for oversight of its annual budget. The research agenda of the Institute is handled by its Fellows, Readers, Research Associates, and Affiliates.
Fellows of the Initiative are established scholars whose research and pedagogical interests include issues related to Africa and the African Diaspora. They are appointed annually and agree to participate in the ongoing life of the Institute through regular participation in its yearly colloquium and by contributing an abstract describing the status of their current research for publication in the Institute's research annual.
Readers of the Initiative are graduate and professional students (within and beyond Notre Dame) working on topics related to the study of Africa and the African Diaspora. Readers are appointed annually and agree to participate regularly in the Institute's yearly colloquium and to write one critical book review for publication in the Institute's research annual.
Research Associates are graduate and undergraduate students who have an interest in the study of Africa and the African Diaspora and wish to spend a year working on a research project. Support for research expenses is provided by the Institute ($300 for undergraduates, $600 for graduate students). Two undergraduate and two graduate Research Associates will be appointed annually. Application for these positions must be made to the director of the Institute.
Those with general or specialized interest in the study of Africa or the African Diaspora are invited to become Affiliates of the Institute. Affiliates are free to participate in all ISRCAD sponsored events, but are not required to have an active research or teaching agenda.
ISRCAD requires most of its members to contribute actively, in some substantial way, to the growing body of scholarship on African and Afrodiasporan peoples. This is born of its commitment to exercise responsible stewardship over the intellectual resources that make it possible for us to experience the diverse and multifaceted religious and cultural landscape of Africa and the Diasporan communities in the Americas, the Caribbean, Europe, and elsewhere in the world.
