Peters Conference

Traditionally, In March of each academic year, the current Peters fellows presented a moderated panel discussion on a topic of timely relevance to the African American community, called the Peters Symposium. It was an opportunity to provide a program open to the community and to showcase the fellows' disciplinary expertise. Topics were selected each year by the fellows in consultation with the department. Past symposiums included topics such as: the legacy of Michael Jackson, the Obama presidency and the 2008 election, African Americans in higher education, popular images of African Americans, and African Americans in the academy.

This year, in lieu of a symposium, the Department of Africana Studies, in conjunction with the College of Arts and Letters, will host a conference for Peters alumni, academics, graduate students, and independent scholars, exploring the role the discipline of Africana Studies has played on the Academy in the last fifty years.  The first Erskine Peters Conference, Africana Studies' Impact on the Academy, will be March 29 - March31, 2012 at the University of Notre Dame.
