Pre-College Programs

African American Scholars at Notre Dame

In the summer, the Office of Pre-College Programs, in collaboration with faculty and staff in the Department of Africana Studies, invites talented, promising African American rising high school seniors to take part in the African American Scholars Program at Notre Dame. The program engages students in discussion and debate in seminars about political, social, and historial aspects of African American life facilitated by University professors and staff. Students also attend information sessions for college preparedness and briefly experience student life at Notre Dame during their one week stay at the University.

This past summer (2006), forty African American high school seniors from across the country attended the Scholars program. Scholars developed a generational mission statement, participated in daily seminars, attended a college preparedness workshop at the Black Expo in Indianapolis, Indiana, and met with current Notre Dame students for the scoop on student life at Notre Dame. The program was also an opportunity for the Scholars to meet and befriend other high school students from different locations that share their common interest of academic success and excellence.
